Should I hire an accountant to do my taxes?

Tax preparation can be an extremely daunting time for most people. Depending on your own situation, hiring a tax professional may or may not be beneficial. If you are self-employed or have gone through many life changes during the tax year, you may want to consider hiring a professional to do your taxes. Some situations may require hiring a tax specialist and vice versa.

When to hire an accountant

Various circumstances may indicate that you should hire a tax professional. In many cases, there are great advantages to consulting an accountant if you have a situation that is too complicated.

For example, owning your own business is probably one of the biggest reasons people hire an accountant to file their taxes. This will ensure that you don't make any mistakes that could cost you dearly in the long run. Your accountant will also be able to work out how much you need to pay each quarter to ensure you don't face a huge tax bill when you refile.

Have you experienced any recent life changes? Your financial situation may become more complex as you get older. Your tax situation will also eventually change. For example, if you buy your first home during the tax year, your taxes will be affected depending on how you file your return. An accountant can make sure you get all the tax relief you are entitled to.

When not to hire an accountant

There are certain situations that do not require the use of an accountant if you fall into one of these categories:

  • You are single
  • Your tax situation has not changed in the past year
  • You have no dependents
  • You work for an employer
  • You don't own any property

These situations would make your tax return pretty basic, so you would just benefit from using tax software to prepare your taxes on your own. It may not be worth paying a professional if nothing is going on that could complicate your taxes.

Other options to consider

Many people do very well with tax software for filing their taxes. These days, tax apps make it extremely easy and convenient to prepare and file your tax returns right from your mobile device.

Some people may even benefit from the IRS free file. This is a federal program where you have access to software that will file your taxes at no cost. If your adjusted gross income is less than $73,000, you would qualify for the program. Plus, other retail services use the same kinds of software you can buy yourself to manage your taxes.
