Make your passion your job, without excuses

"But, that's not possible.", "But, I can't do that." Sure it can! Where there is a will there is a way! Certainly if it is something that you love to do (and probably do very well), there is a good chance that it will succeed. And if you really believe in something and really go for it, the chance of success is even greater! So… start your own business and turn your passion into your job? I say:Do it!

I didn't dare to make passion my job either, until…

I've been thinking about starting my own business for a long time. It seemed so wonderful to work from home, to follow my own course. Start your own business. No pressure and nagging from colleagues around me (okay, they were fun too!), not being watched, and being able to organize my time yourself (in freedom!). And especially to do something that would give me a lot of fun… 'But what?', I always thought. And 'But I can't do that, can I?', 'But I don't have the time for that?', 'But I don't have the energy for that.' And so on, and so on… a typical example of female behavior. I only thought in objections at the thought of making my passion my job.

Until I had a job interview

I went out in my job application outfit. However, we soon found out that the position being offered was not for me. Still, the man who took my application took the trouble to talk to me about what I did want. I threw out everything I would like, but in everything I also indicated that I thought I couldn't do it. He gave me just what I needed. He said:'If you are convinced that you can do something really well, then you can convince others of this too. They will believe you!' It's actually not that difficult to turn your passion into your job!

Losing a job can also be an opportunity

Shortly after the job interview, I lost my job due to bankruptcy. We received a card from our employer with the following text:'When nothing is sure everything is possible.'

All my colleagues were complaining about it, but I thought, 'Yes, it is! Now I have my chance. I have nothing left, so anything is possible now!' I took the plunge and registered at the Chamber of Commerce. In my case I was able to make use of the start-up scheme at the UWV, then you will receive 71% of your unemployment benefit when you start your company for the first six months. I'm a lot further now. And it's very gradual, but I'm growing! Again and again I manage to get a customer. I can bind the customers to me and I enjoy it to the fullest!

Starting your own business, it's not as difficult as you think

We live in a time when it is not that difficult to start something for yourself. To make your passion your job. For example, Joyce 'just' started a webshop without knowing what she was getting into. Yes, it was a lot of research, but very fun and worth it. You have to make a good plan and then you are just welcome at the Chamber of Commerce.

You really don't have to quit your current job (immediately) for this. If you can cut back on your work, it gives you more room to make a good start with your own company, but it is not a must. Gradually you can try to realize your dream. Turn your passion into your job. In your spare time you are engaged in your great hobby. This produces a lot of energy. Because getting satisfaction from your work is actually the most important thing.

Tips to consider when starting your own business

I would like to give you a few tips if you want to start your own business, which you can use to your advantage if you want to turn your passion into your job.

1. Make a good plan

Make a good business plan, so that you can start earning money in the short term. Not everyone starts with a plan, but it can offer you structure.

2. Ensure good administration, that provides an overview

Keeping records seems difficult, especially if you're not an economic type like me. But, I think this is great. You just have to keep track of this from the start and keep it clear for yourself.

  • Make an overview of hours (what do you do and how long do you spend on it?)
  • Keep a financial overview
  • Ensure correct and fast invoicing so that your business account is not empty for too long.

If I can do it, so can you! Go for it and above all enjoy the whole road you travel in entrepreneurship. It's a party.
