Take Microsoft Office Focus mode, for example, which was recently added to Word 2016 for Mac. It's not currently available in Windows versions of Office, but we may see it in the near future.

If you haven't tried Focus Mode yet, here are two ways to launch it right now:

  1. Go View> Focus mode .
  2. Click the Focus mode icon in the status bar.

As you can see, the effect is immediate. The plain white document layout is displayed against a focus-inducing black background.

The ribbon and even the macOS interface (the Dock) are hidden from view. You can choose to keep the ruler or hide it on the View tab on the ribbon.

  • Show the tape. You can return to view the ribbon at any time by moving your mouse to the top of the screen.
  • Change the background. You can give the background different colors in focus mode.
  • Choose Background and select one of the background options from the dropdown menu. Try the more relaxing Twilight and Polar Night options that are easy to use when working at night. Note that backgrounds can be applied to your document only in Print Layout view.

Do you want to exit focus mode? Simply press Esc or toggle the Focus Mode button on the Ribbon.

Yes, every little bit it does. You can customize the view of Word 2016 by unsnapping and sliding the View Ribbon. But there is a scientific basis for working on a dark background. The uncluttered interface approximates the old feeling of writing on a single page.
