How to use hidden underline formats in Excel

The different types of underlines are part of the cell formatting options found in the Font group on the Ribbon. You can apply formatting to selected cells or entire rows and columns.

How to use hidden underline formats in Excel

First, select the cells you want to apply the underline formatting to.

To display the options, go to:Home> Font Group (Click the down arrow)> Format Cells> Underline . Clicking on the dropdown shows all the options you have. You can select any of five different underline types.

How to use hidden underline formats in Excel

  • None: Removes any underline from the cell contents.
  • Single: Adds a single underline that spans the width of the cell content.
  • Double: Adds a double line underline that spans the width of the cell content.
  • Single accounting: Adds an underline that is noticeably lower than the single underline. Also, the width of the underline spans the full width of the cell if the cell contains text or dates.
  • Double counting: Add two lines that are noticeably lower than the Double Underline. Also, the width of the underline spans the full width of the cell if the cell contains text or dates.

Single bookkeeping and double bookkeeping underscores are accounting practices. Single underline is used to highlight subtotals and double underline is used to mark the final total on any financial statement.

As you can see in the screenshot above, the only difference between the styles is the vertical distance between the number and the underlines. Accounting underlines favor a larger vertical gap.
